The Sunchaser is the only car that I truly dream of and obsess on. I don’t need a Porsche or Ferrari, or Mopar or Mustang or baja Bug or VW van, as much as I love them all. As much as it pains me to say, I do not even need a 74-77 Celica. The Sunchaser is my spirit car.
I just want to keep making my obsession better. I will not cry when my son flies the coop in his T Bird; I will feel proud at the creation of an enthusiast. We must stand against the coming storm of the self-driving slave machine.
What is the car you would keep if they took the rest away? What is the car that ends your search?

I haven’t yet driven one, but the Porsche 993 C2 is the one I would expect to best fit this category.

I had her, and I let her go....

Nope. Not yet anyway
Also maybe a Volvo P1800es. But I can’t say for sure as I’ve never even sat in one. But another 4th gen Civic, with a tuned NA B18C1, that’s the car I want more than any other.

I had my spirit car.
Some day I will have all the first gen TT’s. Roadster, coupe, Quattro, fed, 1.8T, 3.2, ALMS..... etc. all of them. They are special, lovely, little beasties and I can’t get enough of them.
My dream is to build one with a substantial lift and knobby off-road tires. Have it done up like the Rothmans 959 rally car or Cayenne Transiberia.

none of them. I don’t get obsessed over inanimate objects.

I had it, and I had to let it go. A 1958 Chevy Impala in a quintessential 50's paint scheme; it was originally two-tone with two different shades of turquoise.
Divorce forced me to move to an apartment, and I didn’t have anyway to store it. I couldn’t bring myself to let it sit outside.

I haven’t had one yet. That’s why I’m 26 or so cars in. The closest I’ve come in terms of execution would be the RX8. I need something similar handling, but with a bit more oomph.

Cars move under their own power so they’re animate... kinda

I’ve had the old dear for over 20 years now, so I guess this is it:

Maserati Gran Cabrio. Someday. Someday...

I know, I KNOW it’s a Maserati Granturismo. It’s the rebirth of the ‘67 Ghibli and I promise once my hands are on the right one that they won’t ever let go.

Not yet. My spirit car is a BMW 320i in BMW Individual Arctic Metallic.
This car:
In this color:
It’s basically me on four wheels.

Not yet, the Corolla is a good daily but not a dream or spirit car. I can’t think of one that would probably do it for me that I could afford in the next 5-10 years either.

It would have to be Datsun 240z. My first car that I bought with my own money.

That is a magnificent piece of automotive machinery, history and art.

What defines a “spirit car”?

Oomph is hard to come by at elevation.

I once owned a 280z. I think I miss that car every day.

No idea if I even have one. Every car I’ve owned (all three of them) I’ve sworn I’d keep forever. But after long enough the age and wear get to be enough that I am ready to move on.
The current GTI is the nicest car I have ever owned and also my first brand new car purchase. I enjoy it. But I am still learning how it drives compared to how I want it to drive.
If I could have the lithe and nimbleness of my prior SVT Focus with the power of the GTI I think I’d be happy. Still needs to be a hatchback. And I hated the FiST/FoST. An RS is far too garish for my taste. A Golf R might do, but that is far faster than I really need.
Something like an SVT+ Focus; Around 200HP at the wheels, a real mechanical diff, light, nimble, loves to rev. With a slightly better gearbox, as the Getrag in the SVT was a bit notchy.
But since they never made that, and maintaining an SVT is a huge PIA, let alone finding parts to make it better- I’ll just improve my GTI where I can and hope I like it.

It is. Forced induction could be oomphy. At least for the lack of grunt, the RX8 revved to the moon.

No.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 22:35 |

Yes. and it is a Porsche... with some Vw and Audi bits thrown in. Easy going, enjoying the ride and scenery than urgency to get there. Often feels out of place, a bit “Soo fahncy” for muscle car meets, too common for concours PCA.

You need maybe 4 superchargers.

So just our favorite car?
DB9 Volante, preferably ‘13-’16. With these mods: Velocity AP headers, high flow cats, muffler delete.
Modern, open-top grand tourer?
Drop dead gorgeous, understated looks (inside and out)?
Silky, torque-rich V12 with a menacing bellow?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 22:53 |

Nope. Best I’ve ever had definitely but the Stang is not my forever car. I’m so inexperienced with driving cars but I research endlessly. If I had to guess, I’d say a Factory Five Cobra replica with a new enough donor and maybe a coyote under the hood.

Right now I’d have to say my Prelude. I’d like to look into an IS F after I pay off my TSX, though.

That is my favorite automotive color of all time.

i have my spirit truck, she just happens to be going through a hard time right now. i am planning a kintsugi rehab.
i am planning on how i am going to try to put as many of the original pieces back together......

Yes. It’s a bit weird, but honest. Does most things well. It’s fun, yet not wild. At the end of the day its reliable, & gets the job done. It’s the first car that feels like me.

Code is DB 334 “hellblau”, and existed into the late 60s, I think. A very similar color “China Blue” was around into the early 80s.

I would of course keep the longbed and push the rest off a cliff if I was forced to.
But I’ve still never found —the— car and I don’t know what it would be.

I think the 911 I’ve got now with the 3.2 is pretty close. I do think it will be my forever car. I almost think it would be more “me” if I had settled for the 2.7. I’m going to start putting pennies away so someday I can get an overbored and rebuilt 2.7/3.2 engine with nickie sleeves

My spirit car is probably a black-on-black E30 with an S52 swap... I’ve never owned a car I loved as much as my first one, a 1987 325es (although my E46 M3 and current C63 AMG came/are growing closer) and I keep an eye out for a clean twin to it all the time, but after 15 years of driving progressively faster and louder German cars I suspect that a stock E30 would feel so slow that I’d rarely actually drive it. Only one way to find out...

No, but I’m working on getting it.

Not perfect.... but its my user name.
In a few years, I will have one that has never seen snow.

I love my GTO, but she definitely isn’t the one. I would fight to keep here, but if I had to only ever have one car again, then I know what that is. I even got to drive one semi hard too. I will say it here and forever till I find and afford one.
1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Ram Air 4 spd in Verdoro Green, black interior, hardtop, and factory a/c.
I would be forever happy with a factory original one of these

Mitsubishi FTO. wanted to drive it more than the Skylines, the OG Corvette Grand Sport, the Imprezas, the Lancer Evolutions, the Porches, the Mazda RX-3 through 8, the Fairlady Z’s, and even the Viper.
If any of the Gran turismo/Forza Motorsport games I played tracked play time on cars, the FTO would be at the top, i don’t know I just always raced it even once in any time I played.
